Designed to ensure a reliable and secure connection between NMEA 0183, RS422, RS232 devices and a PC USB port, the Actisense USG-2 interface converts a standard USB port into a bidirectional serial port compliant with marine requirements. This interface is particularly suited to applications requiring advanced electrical protection and broad compatibility with various equipment. It stands out from generic USB-to-serial converters due to its isolation level and robust design.
Isolation and Electrical Protection
The USG-2 features 2500 V galvanic isolation for the input and 1500 V for the output, achieved through Actisense’s ISO-Drive™ technology and opto-isolated circuits. This functionality is critical for eliminating ground loops and effectively protecting connected equipment, including the host PC, from electrical damage. Inputs and outputs are also protected against overvoltage, electrostatic discharge (ESD), and short circuits, ensuring superior system integrity compared to non-isolated adapters. Its input circuit can capture low-level signals, often too weak for standard PC serial ports.
Performance and Compatibility
This interface supports a wide range of baud rates, from 300 to 230400 bps, making it compatible with various NMEA 0183 architectures as well as RS232/RS422 requirements. It includes an isolated NMEA 0183 Listener (input) and NMEA 0183 Talker (output) port. USB compatibility extends to versions 1.1, 2.0, and 3.0. Power is supplied directly via the USB bus, with a maximum consumption of 50 mA. The device creates a virtual COM port on the connected PC, ensuring compatibility with standard marine navigation and display software.
Marine Design and Installation
The USG-2 is designed for the marine environment, with encapsulated electronics providing IP67 protection. Its ABS (PA-765) housing is flame-retardant (UL94 V-0), as is the PCB encapsulant made of polyurethane. The interface operates within a temperature range of -25°C to +70°C. A 2.0 m high-quality shielded USB cable and a high-retention USB connector are included, ensuring a robust and vibration-resistant connection. The tool-free plug-and-play connector, featuring a locking latch and strain relief, enables quick and secure installation. Diagnostic LEDs (blue for power, green for receive, orange for transmit) allow for quick verification of connection status and data transfer. The interface weighs 65 g, and the USB cable 70 g. A 3-year warranty is provided, extendable to 5 years after registration.
