Expert opinion

« Standard Horizon MH-73A4B external microphone: The essential extension for HX VHF radios in wet environments »

The Standard Horizon MH-73A4B waterproof external microphone is a strategic accessory for any user of portable VHF radios in the HX series. Its primary value lies in the ability to relocate the communication function while protecting the main unit. On a rigid inflatable, small sailboat, or kayak—where constant exposure to spray is a given and direct handling of the radio may be constrained—this microphone allows the VHF to remain dry in a waterproof bag or pocket, while the microphone itself, with IPX7 immersion resistance, remains accessible for instant communications.

Installation is remarkably simple: it only needs to be connected to the dedicated port on the radio. Its integrated clip is designed for quick and secure attachment to a lifejacket, work vest, or strap, freeing the operator’s hands. This feature is crucial during delicate maneuvers or when full attention must be devoted to navigation.

The distinguishing feature of this model is its IPX7 waterproof rating, an essential characteristic for equipment intended for permanent exposure to marine elements. Unlike non-submersible microphones, the MH-73A4B provides peace of mind regarding durability and functionality even after accidental immersion. However, it is imperative to verify compatibility with the HX VHF radio, ensuring the model is not among the exceptions (HX280E/HX300E).
