Converters: onboard energy, without compromise

Power independence is crucial when sailing. Inverters, by converting the direct current (DC) from your batteries into standard alternating current (AC), allow you to power your 220V devices on board, just like at home. At Skysat, we understand the importance of a reliable and stable power supply, which is why we rigorously select high-performance and robust inverters. Discover here how to choose the right model for your needs and requirements.

choose the right conversion power

The inverter's power rating is a crucial factor. It must exceed the combined power ratings of all the devices you intend to use simultaneously. An undersized inverter can lead to overload and damage the inverter or connected devices. Consider the power surges at startup, which are often higher than the nominal power rating.

Pure sine wave inverters: Choose this technology for sensitive devices such as computers, televisions, and medical equipment. They provide a stable and clean voltage, preventing malfunctions.
Quasi-sine wave inverters: Suitable for less sensitive devices such as phone chargers or simple tools. Less expensive, they can generate interference with some electronic devices.
Continuous power vs peak power: Check that the converter supports the peak power required to start certain appliances (refrigerator, air conditioner).

the importance of protection and security

A quality inverter should include protection against overloads, short circuits, overvoltage, and undervoltage. These safety features protect not only the inverter itself, but also your batteries and connected devices. An efficient cooling system is also essential to ensure the inverter's longevity.

Overvoltage protection: Prevents damage caused by excessively high input voltage.
Undervoltage protection: Protects batteries against excessive discharge.
Galvanic isolation: Electrically separates the input and output of the converter, reducing the risk of electrolytic corrosion.

system integration and compatibility

Integrating the inverter into your onboard electrical system is crucial. Ensure its compatibility with your battery bank, battery charger, and energy management system. Proper installation guarantees optimal operation and increased safety.

Lithium battery compatibility: Check that the converter is compatible with lithium-ion (LiFePO4) technology if you are using this type of battery.
Communication with control screens: Some converters can be monitored via NMEA 2000 compatible multifunction displays (MFDs).
Combined inverter/charger: A compact solution integrating conversion and battery charging functions.

💡 Skysat's advice

Before choosing your inverter, carefully assess your energy needs. Consider slightly oversizing to anticipate future requirements and ensure a safety margin. A well-executed installation, with appropriately sized cables and suitable protective devices, is essential for the reliability of your electrical system.
