The short answer
First, choose the mechanical point to measure. Smartlink fits between two compatible links, Smarttune replaces a standing rigging turnbuckle, Smarttoggle works between the furler and the sail cable of a headsail; load pins and Smartbatten address other geometries. Then, verify the working load, diameters, threads, pins, orientations, accuracy ranges, display interfaces, and maintenance constraints of the exact model. A load sensor does not reinforce the rigging nor does it define its safe limit. The permissible values remain those of the naval architect, rigger, and structural components.
Start from the navigation question
A useful measurement answers a clear decision: restoring rig tension, comparing a setting, monitoring sail load, documenting a peak, or feeding an alarm strategy. Without an objective, the crew collects a figure that is difficult to interpret.
Note the measurement point, the direction of the load, the usual range, and the maximum allowed by the installation. Also identify the required reading frequency: occasional check via phone, permanent display at the chart table, or recording for analysis.
The Cyclops Marine catalog groups sensors, bridges, chargers, and cables, but each installation has its own manual.
Smartlink: removable inline measurement
A Smartlink fits into a tension chain between accessories that match its geometry. The Smartlink² Atto guide requires a 12 mm shackle or textile sling in each opening to achieve the stated accuracy and discourages multiple attachment points in the same opening.
This setup suits a portable measurement or a point where two links can accommodate the sensor without side load. Check the working load of the model, the actual diameter of the accessories, alignment, and the space required so that nothing bears on the housing.
Smartlink must not be used to support a person at height. A shock, overload, or deformation may require inspection and recalibration. The documented Atto model measures up to its own WLL; do not transfer this value to another size.
Smarttune: replace the turnbuckle, do not add it randomly
Smarttune is designed as an instrumented turnbuckle. The size, threads, and travel must match the installation. Replacing it alters a dormant rigging element: unload and secure the stay according to procedure, record a reference length, and have the work performed by a competent person.
The French manual states that the sensor operates by tension via its threaded studs. Pressing on the plastic housing, for example due to an over-tightened furling drum, can produce an unexpected reading. Orientation, anticorrosion paste, reassembly, and final adjustment are part of the installation.
Smarttune is relevant when you want to record and reproduce a rigging tension. It does not convert a measured value into a universal setting: the target reference depends on the boat, rigging, sails, and the professional’s recommendations.
Smarttoggle: measuring a headsail
Smarttoggle is designed to be installed inline between a headsail furler and the sail line according to the manufacturer’s setup. The manual explicitly states that it is not intended for structural locations such as a stay, nor for supporting people working at height.
Select the model based on the documented maximum working load and shaft diameter. Ensure the assembly remains free, aligned, and compatible with the furler. A shock load or overload can damage the instrumentation even if the body appears undamaged.
This measurement helps recover a sail line tension or observe loads while sailing. It does not replace the limits given by the sail, line, and furler manufacturer.
Load pin and Smartbatten: when geometry demands otherwise
A load pin replaces or instruments an axle designed to withstand stress. Its design requires exact dimensions, supports, orientation, and measurement range. Custom versions must be studied; an approximate diameter does not prove interchangeability.
Smartbatten measures a load on a batten according to its range. It addresses a different aerodynamic and structural question than the tension of a stay or a headsail. Do not group all these products under the sole criterion of tonnage.
If the standard catalogue does not match the geometry, submit a drawing and loads to Cyclops or the competent professional rather than improvising spacers.
Comparing load, accuracy, and useful resolution
The manual of a sensor indicates a working or calibrated load and an accuracy expressed over that range. A very high-capacity sensor may offer an absolute uncertainty too large for a small load. Conversely, choosing too close increases the risk of overload.
Establish three values: current load, expected maximum load, and validated structural limit. Choose a sensor whose range covers the use with a margin defined by the specialist, without making the sensor’s WLL the new limit of the rigging.
After prolonged loading, some Cyclops guides indicate a return to zero that can take one to two minutes. An impact or overload may require recalibration. Document the zero, conditions, and sensor version when comparing sessions.
Plan for display and power
Wireless sensors can communicate with the app and, depending on the product, with a NMEA 2000 bridge to marine electronics. Identify the number of sensors, distance, bridge location, output protocol and target display before purchase. The NMEA 2000 architecture guide helps frame the network link, while the autopilot hub locates load usage in performance electronics.
Also check batteries or charging. The Smartlink² Atto uses wireless charging and multiple autonomy modes; Smarttune comes with different battery configurations depending on size. Waterproofing depends on the seal and correct reassembly. A dead battery can produce missing or misleading data: add this check to your routine.
