Designed for reliable marine communication, the Lowrance LINK-6S fixed VHF radio with DSC is an essential communication device for recreational boaters. This model positions itself as a reliable entry-level solution within the Lowrance lineup, offering basic safety functions without the complexity of more advanced systems such as VHF radios with integrated AIS transponders (e.g., Lowrance Link-9 or Simrad RS40). It serves as a direct alternative to comparable Class D DSC VHF models like the Garmin VHF 115i or Raymarine Ray53, distinguished by its Lowrance user interface and built-in GPS.
Features and Technical Performance
The LINK-6S operates on transmit frequencies of 156.025 - 157.425 MHz and receive frequencies of 156.050 - 163.275 MHz, covering all international, U.S., and Canadian channels. It offers selectable transmission power of 25 W or 1 W, suitable for long-distance or close-range communications. Its dual integrated receiver continuously monitors DSC channel 70, ensuring distress calls are received without interrupting voice communications. The radio includes a GPS with a frequency of 1575.42 MHz and horizontal accuracy better than 10 m, enabling automatic position transmission in DSC distress calls.
Connectivity and Integration
Equipped with an NMEA 0183 port, the LINK-6S can receive GPS data (RMC, GGA, GLL, GNS) and transmit DSC information (DSC calls and enhanced position DSE) to compatible navigation equipment. Although it lacks an NMEA 2000 port, its NMEA 0183 connectivity makes it compatible with many existing chartplotters and multifunction displays. The 42 mm x 34 mm FSTN LCD screen features adjustable contrast and backlighting for optimal readability in all conditions. The radio is IPx7 certified, ensuring temporary immersion resistance, and operates within a temperature range of -20 °C to +55 °C.
