How to choose a fixed marine VHF radio?

This collection includes fixed radios, systems with remote control units, and their accessories. ASN (DSC), AIS reception, and AIS transmission are three distinct functions: verify the exact model before purchasing.

ASN, AIS received, or AIS transmitted: what's the difference?

The Raymarine Ray53 is an ASN VHF with built-in GPS, without an integrated AIS receiver. To receive AIS targets, compare the B&G V60 AIS-RX and the Raymarine Ray73: receiving AIS data does not broadcast your boat's position. The B&G V60-B combines the VHF with a Class B AIS transceiver. With Icom, the M510 EVO AIS receives AIS; the standard M510 EVO does not include this receiver.

Front-panel display or remote control unit?

A VHF with a front-panel display places the screen and controls at the helm station. A model with a remote control unit, such as the Icom IC-M410BB, separates the radio unit from the control panel. Before ordering, check the compatible handsets, the number of possible stations, and included items on the product page and in the manual. The Icom GM600 GMDSS models meet a specific professional requirement: do not confuse them with standard recreational VHF radios.

Useful checks before installation

  • Check the power supply, VHF antenna location, and mounting space specified in the model's manual.
  • If you want to share position or data with a chartplotter, verify the exact interfaces of the model (NMEA 0183, NMEA 2000, or others) and those of devices already onboard.
  • For ASN and AIS, verify the position data, MMSI identification, and, depending on the model, the required accessories in the manufacturer's documentation before commissioning.
