RT1050: Fixed VHF 25W with Touchscreen - NMEA2000 and Built-in GPS Antenna

The Navicom RT1050 fixed VHF positions itself as a modern and versatile marine communication solution, particularly suited to recreational boaters seeking simplified installation and efficient network integration. Its compact size (180 x 91 x 38 mm) and the option for flush mounting, with documented dimensions, make it a relevant choice for helm stations where space is limited, whether on cruising sailboats, rigid inflatables, or small powerboats.

The integration of a built-in GPS antenna is a major asset for the RT1050’s DSC (Digital Selective Calling) Class D functionality. It ensures the VHF always has a valid position for distress calls without requiring a connection to an external GPS source for this basic function. However, as an installer, it is critical to note that the performance of this built-in antenna depends directly on the mounting location. For optimal GPS signal reception, the unit must be installed in an unobstructed location with a clear view of the sky. Mounting deep inside a console or under a deck could degrade reception and may necessitate GPS data input via NMEA.

NMEA2000 and NMEA0183 connectivity gives the RT1050 extensive integration flexibility. Support for a wide range of NMEA2000 PGNs—including position data (129025, 129029), COG/SOG information (129026), and AIS reports (129038, 129039, 129040)—allows the VHF to integrate smoothly into an existing electronic network. This means the RT1050 can not only share its own position data but also receive and potentially display data from other onboard sensors, including AIS targets if a transponder is connected to the NMEA2000 network. The NMEA0183 port provides essential backward compatibility for older systems, with an input for common GPS sentences (RMC, GGA, GLL, ZDA, VTG, GSV) and an output for DSC and DSE information, as well as AIVDM for received AIS data.

The touchscreen represents a significant ergonomic evolution, offering intuitive navigation and quick access to VHF functions, particularly for DSC call management and directories. This interface enhances usability, especially in rough sea conditions where manipulating physical buttons may be less practical. Finally, the 30W loudspeaker output is a practical feature for onboard communication, fog signaling, or use as an intercom, adding a layer of versatility beyond its primary radio communication function.
