Boat electrical wiring: cables, protection, connections
The electrical wiring determines the reliability of the entire onboard installation. The proper approach involves sizing the cables, selecting appropriate protections, and then carefully handling the connections and bulkhead penetrations.
- Cables — cross-section, length, number of conductors, flexibility, and environmental resistance.
- Terminals and connections — clean crimping, heat-shrink tubing, terminals, and circuit labeling.
- Fuses and distribution — protection close to the source, consistent ratings, and accessible distribution bars.
- Cable glands — watertightness and mechanical retention in exposed areas.
Skysat tip
Always size the cable and fuse together. An undersized cable overheats, and an oversized fuse no longer protects the circuit. For sensitive circuits, keep data cables as separate as possible from high-power circuits.
