Detailed description
Detailed description
The Blue Sea Systems 8238-BSS AC digital ammeter is an instrument designed for precise monitoring of alternating current within a 0 to 150 A range. Built for marine applications, it integrates into Blue Sea Systems' 8200 series alongside the 8237 voltmeter, 8239 frequency meter, and 8247 multimeter. Unlike the 8247 multimeter, which offers alarm and multi-measurement functions, the 8238-BSS focuses solely on amperage reading, providing essential data for onboard energy management.
AC System Monitoring
Monitoring amperage is critical to prevent overloads, particularly when using limited shore power supplies or generators. Excessive current can damage equipment or trip circuit breakers. The 8238-BSS ammeter allows users to view real-time power consumption, optimizing the use of available energy sources. The system requires the installation of an external current transformer (CT). The signal generated by the CT is weak (e.g., 10 A primary current would produce 10 mA for a 100 A CT, or 0.33 mA for a 1 A CT), necessitating the use of twisted-pair cables to minimize electrical noise susceptibility and ensure measurement accuracy.
Installation and Safety
Installing the 8238-BSS ammeter requires strict adherence to safety standards, as it involves high-voltage connections. It is imperative to disconnect all AC sources (generators, inverters, shore power) before any manipulation. A specific warning applies to the current transformer (CT): never open the CT wires while in operation, as this can generate lethal voltages. If the meter is removed, the CT wires must be short-circuited. For 240 V single-phase systems requiring measurement across multiple legs, a dedicated switch (such as Blue Sea Systems PN 8410) is required for safe CT management.
Design and Features
The 8238-BSS ammeter features a splash-resistant faceplate and corrosion-protected printed circuit boards, ensuring durability in marine environments. However, it is not designed for outdoor installation without additional protection. The device offers three adjustable display brightness levels via a button, and single-button models include a sleep mode that dims the screen to a single decimal point. While it lacks the integrated alarms of the 8247 multimeter, its simplicity and dedicated function make it a reliable choice for applications requiring direct and accurate AC amperage readings.
