Detailed description
Detailed description
The FURUNO FA40 is a bi-frequency AIS receiver (Black Box type), designed to enhance navigation safety by providing essential information about nearby vessels equipped with AIS. This compact and lightweight unit simplifies integration with various marine navigation systems.
Performance and features
The FA40 operates within a frequency range of 156.025 MHz to 162.025 MHz, with a 25 kHz channel spacing. It uses a dual superheterodyne reception method and can process up to 2,250 reports per minute on one channel, or 4,500 reports per minute on two channels. Its sensitivity is -107 dBm or better (PER 20% or less). It receives real-time AIS Class A and Class B data, improving situational awareness for collision avoidance, even in low visibility or high-traffic areas.
Integration and connectivity
Designed for flexible integration, the FA40 is compatible with most AIS radars and chartplotters, including Furuno NavNet systems. It features an NMEA2000 port and two NMEA0183 serial ports (IEC61162-1, 4800/38400 bps), plus a USB 2.0 port for maintenance and configuration. Power supply is 12–24 VDC (9.6–31.2 V), with a current draw of 0.3–0.2 A. The AIS receiver unit is waterproof to IP55 standards.
Data and installation
The FA40 displays detailed information such as vessel name, call sign, position, course over ground (COG), speed over ground (SOG), rate of turn (ROT), heading, navigation status, MMSI number, IMO number, vessel type, cargo, length, draft, destination, and estimated time of arrival. Installation is straightforward thanks to compatibility with most VHF antennas. A signal splitter is available as an option to share the VHF antenna with a radio. Initial configuration can be performed via the NMEA2000 network, including with Furuno NavNet TZtouch2/TZtouch3 displays.
