The FURUNO FM4800 is an all-in-one marine VHF radiotelephone integrating five essential functions for navigation and safety at sea. This unit combines a VHF radio, a GPS receiver, an AIS receiver, a Digital Selective Calling (DSC) class D function, and a loudhailer with intercom capabilities, all within a compact unit.

VHF Communication and Integrated Safety

The FM4800 offers switchable VHF output power of 25 W or 1 W, ensuring reliable communication on international, US, and Canadian channels. Its built-in AIS receiver operates on frequencies 161.975 MHz (AIS1) and 162.025 MHz (AIS2), enabling AIS target detection for improved situational awareness and collision avoidance. The DSC class D functionality facilitates routine and distress calls, enhancing safety at sea.

Accurate Navigation and System Connectivity

Equipped with an internal high-sensitivity 72-channel GPS receiver with integrated antenna, the FURUNO FM4800 provides 10-meter positioning accuracy with a one-second update interval, eliminating the need for an external GPS antenna for DSC functions. The unit features NMEA2000 and NMEA0183 interfaces, allowing the sharing of GPS, DSC, and AIS data with other onboard electronics such as chartplotters and multifunction displays (MFD). It can also serve as a backup GPS source for connected systems. When the MOB (Man Overboard) mode is activated on a compatible Furuno MFD (e.g., NavNet TZtouch2), the FM4800 can initiate a distress call via its rotary knob.

Audio Functions and Marine Robustness

The FM4800’s built-in loudhailer delivers a maximum output of 30 W (at 4 ohms), with 8 automatic fog and warning signals. The listen function allows external sounds to be captured and retransmitted via the internal loudspeaker, useful for communication between the deck and the bridge. The main unit is IP67 certified, ensuring resistance to immersion. It supports up to three HS-4800 handsets and SP-4800 speakers, offering dual-station capability and intercom functions. The FM4800 also includes 10 weather channels and an ATIS mode for inland waterways. Its compact housing and aesthetics are designed to integrate with other Furuno equipment such as the NavNet TZtouch2 and FI70 series.
