Victron Energy’s Smart Battery Sense long range is a wireless battery voltage and temperature sensor designed to optimize the performance of Victron MPPT solar chargers. It transmits critical data via the VE.Smart Network, a Bluetooth Smart-based wireless technology, allowing the charger to precisely adjust its charging parameters for maximum efficiency and extended battery life. Its extended range of up to 10 meters provides significant installation flexibility.
Integration and ease of installation
This device stands out for its straightforward installation. It comes with pre-crimped 10 mm (M10) eyelets and a T1A 250V inline fuse, attaching directly to the battery body via its self-adhesive strap. It can be connected to any individual battery within a bank. This Plug & Play approach minimizes installation time and complexity, making it accessible even to less experienced users. The 45 cm cables can be extended if necessary, provided the same or larger gauge is used.
Positioning and compatibility of the Smart Battery Sense
The Smart Battery Sense long range is an ideal solution for solar charging systems that would benefit from voltage and temperature monitoring without the complexity or cost of a more advanced battery management system. It is essential for installations equipped with Victron MPPT solar chargers. However, it is unnecessary—and even discouraged—in systems already controlled by a Color Control GX or Venus GX, which already include advanced monitoring functions. Similarly, installations with a BMV-712 battery monitor and an accessory temperature sensor do not require it. For a BMV-702 with an optional temperature sensor, a VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart dongle may serve as a wireless connectivity alternative. The Smart Battery Sense thus positions itself as a targeted and cost-effective solution for optimizing standalone MPPTs.

Compact with dimensions of 14 x 38 x 38 mm, the sensor operates across a wide voltage range of 8V to 60V, with an absolute maximum of 65V. It functions in varied temperature conditions, from -10°C to +60°C. Its power consumption is extremely low, ranging from 0.2 mA to 0.3 mA at 24V or 48V in unconnected mode, and not exceeding 0.9 mA at 24V or 0.6 mA at 48V when actively connected to the VE.Smart network. This low consumption ensures minimal impact on battery discharge, even over the long term.
