Victron Energy’s VE.Can protocol is an advanced solution for integrating and managing marine energy systems, particularly through SmartSolar MPPT charge controllers. Designed for installations requiring robust communication and multi-device synchronization, it optimizes energy harvesting and network stability.
Key features of the VE.Can protocol
The VE.Can protocol enables extended network synchronization and monitoring. Up to 25 SmartSolar charge controllers can be interconnected via VE.Can, ensuring coordinated battery charging. Unlike older CAN-bus models, VE.Can allows individual monitoring of each controller via a GX device (such as a Color Control GX or Cerbo GX) and the VRM portal, providing detailed performance data for each PV string. This capability is critical for diagnosing and optimizing large solar installations.
Integration and performance of SmartSolar MPPT VE.Can controllers
SmartSolar MPPT solar charge controllers integrating VE.Can feature ultra-fast Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) technology, improving energy harvesting by up to 30% compared to PWM controllers and 10% compared to slower MPPT controllers, particularly under cloudy or partially shaded conditions. They detect optimal maximum power points even in partial shading, maximizing efficiency. These controllers achieve conversion efficiencies exceeding 98% without requiring cooling fans. They support battery voltages of 12V, 24V, 36V, and 48V (auto-detection except for 36V) and can handle nominal charging currents from 70A to 100A, with nominal PV power ratings up to 5800W for 48V systems.
Connectivity and flexibility
In addition to VE.Can, these devices include VE.Direct and Bluetooth Smart communication, facilitating configuration, monitoring, and updates via the VictronConnect app. Support for Energy Storage Systems (ESS) and control via smart batteries (CAN-bus) are key features absent in previous generations. They feature extensive electronic protection, including against PV short circuits and reverse polarity, as well as overheat protection. A programmable relay and remote on/off function are also included. The enclosure is blue (RAL 5012) with IP43 protection for electronic components and IP22 for the connection area.
