Detailed description

Designed for demanding marine environments, the round speaker Standard Horizon STH-220SW is an external audio solution for your embedded communication system.

Audio performance and marine robustness

It is designed to function as a public address (PA) speaker or foghorn when connected to a compatible VHF radio. The STH-220SW delivers clear and sharp audio reception, making it suitable for broadcasting voice messages, sirens, and other audible alerts in the marine environment.

Its UV-resistant ABS plastic construction protects it against marine elements, ensuring durability and water resistance. Dedicated connections include a white wire for the external speaker positive, a red wire for the PA speaker positive, and a shield for the negative.

Versatile installation and compatibility

The Standard Horizon STH-220SW can be installed in versatile ways, with mounting options depending on the specific setup. It is compatible with various marine VHF radios from Standard Horizon, such as the GX2410GPS/E, GX2200S, GX3000S, GX5000S, GX5500S, and VLH-300 models. This compatibility enables access to features such as 30W PA output with foghorn signaling and a bidirectional listening function, optimizing onboard communication experience.

Expert opinion

« Marine external speaker: robustness and clarity for VHF communication »

As a marine systems engineer, I see the Standard Horizon STH-220SW external speaker as an essential component for optimizing safety and communication on board. It is not just a speaker; it transforms a compatible VHF radio into an external sound system and fog horn, a feature often underestimated but critical at sea.

Its functional value is undeniable, especially in scenarios where external voice communication is paramount. Consider delicate maneuvers in a crowded harbor, interaction with other vessels or mandatory signaling in fog. The STH-220SW allows clear and audible messages to be broadcast, improving responsiveness and safety.

The marine robustness of this model is a strong point. Its UV-resistant ABS plastic design sets it apart from consumer audio solutions, ensuring long-term reliability in the corrosive and demanding marine environment. Seamless integration with Standard Horizon VHF radios, such as the GX2410GPS/E, GX2200S, GX3000S, GX5000S, GX5500S and VLH-300 models, is a significant advantage. This compatibility enables full use of the 30W hailer functions with pre-programmed fog signals and the listening function, providing a consistent and high-performance solution.

Installation is simplified by flexible mounting options and direct wiring. It is important to note that the optimal performance of this speaker will inherently depend on the power and features of the VHF radio to which it is connected. It is an accessory that complements and extends the capabilities of a marine radio but does not replace it.
