Mapping: Navigate with precision and reliability

Marine charting is a fundamental element of modern navigation. Whether you're an occasional coastal sailor or an experienced offshore racer, accurate and up-to-date charts are essential for your safety and optimal performance. Drawing on its extensive experience in offshore racing, Skysat offers a carefully curated selection of marine charts and mapping solutions to meet all your needs.

The different types of nautical charts

Choosing a nautical chart depends on your sailing area, your specific needs, and your chartplotter. There are different types of charts, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for safe and enjoyable navigation.

Raster Maps: Digitized reproductions of traditional paper maps. They offer a familiar look but may lack detail at certain zoom levels.
Vector Maps: Digital maps built from vector data. They are more dynamic, allow zooming without loss of quality, and offer advanced features such as querying objects (buoys, lighthouses, etc.).
C-MAP maps: Vector maps offering global coverage and specific features such as background shading and 3D views.
Navionics charts: Vector charts renowned for their wealth of detail, including bathymetric data from citizen science sources.

Integration and compatibility

Integrating your charts with your chartplotter and other navigation instruments is essential for an optimal user experience. Ensure the charts are compatible with your equipment and that data integration is easy.

Chartplotter compatibility: Check that your chartplotter is compatible with the chart format you wish to use (C-MAP, Navionics, etc.).
Chart updates: Nautical charts require regular updates to incorporate changes in navigational aids, depths, etc. Ensure that the update process is simple and efficient.
Radar overlay: The ability to overlay the radar image onto the map is a major advantage for navigation in low visibility.
AIS and mapping: Displaying AIS targets on the map allows you to visualize maritime traffic and anticipate collision risks.

Choosing the right geographic coverage

The geographical coverage of your map is a determining factor. It is crucial to select a map that covers the area where you are navigating, with a level of detail sufficient for your needs.

Local charts: Ideal for coastal navigation in a limited geographical area. They offer a high level of detail.
Regional maps: Cover a larger region, such as the Mediterranean or the Caribbean.
World maps: Offer global coverage, but may have a more limited level of detail in some areas.
Electronic maps vs. paper maps: While electronic maps offer undeniable ease of use, it is always recommended to have a paper map on board as a backup.

💡 Skysat's advice

Before choosing your charts, download the apps from different providers (C-MAP, Navionics) to your smartphone or tablet. This will allow you to evaluate the interface and the wealth of information offered, and make an informed choice.
