Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a fishfinder, a GPS-fishfinder combo, and a standalone depth sounder?

The fishfinder is the display and electronics that interpret the echoes. The all-in-one unit adds GPS and chartplotting to the same screen. The transducer is the underwater component that transmits and receives the ultrasound: it determines the image quality. A display sold "without transducer" does not work on its own.

Which fishfinder for sea fishing from a 5 to 8 m boat?

For coastal waters, a 7 to 10-inch combo with a CHIRP transom-mount transducer and down or side imaging covers most needs: bottom reading, structures, sandbanks. Beyond 60 to 80 m of depth or for offshore fishing, a 600 W to 1 kW through-hull transducer becomes useful. The guide 'Which fishfinder for sea fishing' details choices by program.

ActiveTarget 2, LiveScope or MEGA Live: which one to choose?

Each live sonar is tied to a specific display brand: LiveScope with compatible Garmin units, ActiveTarget 2 with compatible Lowrance and Simrad units, MEGA Live 2 with compatible Humminbird units. Selection is therefore determined first by the display you already own or plan to purchase, then by the mounting method (bow-motor, pole, transom). Check the manufacturer’s list of compatible displays before buying.

What thrust for my sailboat?

The usual rule of thumb from manufacturers is about 2 pounds of thrust per 100 pounds (45 kg) of loaded boat, including crew and gear. At sea, with current or wind, allow extra margin and choose a saltwater-rated model. Shaft length is calculated from the mounting point to the waterline: refer to the manufacturer’s chart.

12, 24 or 36 volts?

Motors around 55 lb thrust run on 12 V, 80 lb models on 24 V, 100 lb and above on 36 V; some accept dual voltages. Voltage dictates the battery: a 24 V motor requires a 24 V battery or two 12 V batteries in series, never a starter battery. The guide “Which lithium battery for an electric motor” explains sizing.

What is the autonomy with a lithium battery?

Available energy is calculated in watt-hours: voltage × capacity (for example 24 V × 70 Ah = 1 680 Wh). Range then depends on the motor’s actual consumption, which can vary by a factor of five between slow cruising and full power. Manufacturers publish consumption at each power level: this is the data to use, not the maximum power rating.

How are lithium batteries shipped?

Beyond 100 Wh, a lithium battery is a dangerous good: it is shipped by an approved carrier in its certified packaging in France and continental Europe. Today, the transport of these batteries is priced after order; the product sheet indicates this. Collection in Carnac remains possible.

Is my depth sounder compatible with my display?

Compatibility = same brand, same connector, same generation. Adapters exist between some generations (7, 9 or 12 pins), but not between all. We check manufacturer documentation and never infer compatibility from a connector that "looks similar." If in doubt, send us the exact reference of the display and the transducer.

Does Skysat install the equipment?

Yes, at the workshop in Carnac and on boats in southern Brittany; elsewhere, via partner installers. Installation is quoted separately from the equipment. We also provide wiring diagrams for DIY installation.

What warranty and after-sales service?

The equipment is covered by the manufacturer’s warranty, whose duration depends on the brand and product; it is indicated on each product page. Skysat is the official distributor of the brands listed: warranty service is handled by us, in coordination with the manufacturer.

Choosing your fishing electronics by practice

A fishfinder is not a catalogue purchase: it depends on the fish you are targeting, the depth, the boat, and what you already have on board. Coastal lure fishing requires fine reading of structures at 5 to 40 m; offshore trolling demands high transmit power and range; freshwater predatory fishing relies on live sonar and GPS anchoring; kayak fishing imposes weight, battery life, and compactness. This page therefore classes equipment by use before classifying it by product family.

Fishfinders and combos: what really matters

Three criteria make the difference: screen size, readable in sunlight and from the helm; available sonar technology (CHIRP, down imaging, side imaging, live sonar); and mapping/GPS, which turn a fishfinder into a navigation tool. Transmit power and frequencies come next, especially beyond 50 m of depth. A "no-transducer" display is for those keeping their current transducer: verify compatibility before choosing this option.

Transducers and transducers: the heart of the system

The transducer determines image quality far more than the display. Transom-mount for simplicity and small boats, thru-hull for clean signal at speed, glue-on to avoid drilling, or integrated into the electric motor for forward-looking views. High frequencies provide detail; low frequencies carry farther; CHIRP transducers sweep a range of frequencies to better separate echoes. Airmar supplies most brands with high-power transducers.

Live sonar: seeing fish in real time

Garmin’s LiveScope, Lowrance and Simrad’s ActiveTarget 2, and Humminbird’s MEGA Live display in real time what is happening ahead or below the boat. Their value is highest in finesse fishing (predatory fish, vertical jigging, bass on rock) and more debatable when trolling. They require a compatible display and careful mounting, most often on the bow motor.

Electric motors and GPS anchoring

An electric fishing motor is not just for quiet movement: GPS-anchor models hold the boat on a spot, follow a depth contour, or track a route. Key criteria: thrust in pounds, shaft length, voltage (12, 24, or 36 V), freshwater or saltwater version, control (foot pedal, remote, display), and integrated transducer. Garmin Force and Lowrance Ghost are in stock; Minn Kota and MotorGuide are coming.

Power: lithium batteries, charging, and protection

An electric motor without the right battery disappoints. Dedicated lithium batteries in 12, 24, or 36 V deliver range and reduced weight; they require a matching charger, properly sized circuit breaker or fuse, correct cable gauge, and a battery cut-off switch. This is where the workshop adds the most value. Batteries over 100 Wh travel as dangerous goods.

Mapping

Detailed bathymetric charts (Navionics Platinum+, Garmin Vision+, C-MAP Reveal X) show the reliefs that concentrate fish, and personal recording features (Quickdraw, Genesis) let you log your own areas. Chart format depends on the display brand.

Installation and compatibility

We validate screen/transducer/motor compatibility from manufacturer documentation and check it before shipping when you tell us your gear. For installation, the Carnac workshop and partner installers serve the entire Atlantic coast and the Mediterranean.
