The Garmin Panoptix PS51-TH sonar with FrontVü is a cutting-edge solution for preventive navigation and underwater obstacle detection. Designed for thru-hull installation, this multibeam sonar provides an essential forward-looking sonar view, integrating FrontVü and LiveVü technologies for enhanced situational awareness. It stands out within Garmin’s transducer range, which includes traditional models, GT-TH with ClearVü and SideVü, as well as LVS-TH with LiveScope for forward and under-boat views. The PS51-TH is specifically positioned for safety, enabling navigators to anticipate hazards in shallow or unknown waters.

Performance and Thru-Hull Installation

As a thru-hull transducer, the Panoptix PS51-TH sonar ensures superior signal quality, even at high speeds and in deep waters, thanks to continuous and non-turbulent water contact. Its design allows it to work with all types of engines. Installation requires careful attention: a hole must be drilled in the hull, and a fairing block (not included and to be fabricated) is essential if the deadrise angle exceeds 5° to ensure the sonar beam is perpendicular to the waterline. With a fairing block, the sonar can adapt to hulls up to 29 mm thick for a deadrise angle of 12°, and up to 19 mm for a 20° angle.

Mounting Considerations and Signal Optimization

For optimal performance, the positioning of the Garmin Panoptix PS51-TH sonar is critical. On displacement hulls, it should be mounted near the centerline. For planing hulls, the stern, near the centerline and inside the first strake, is recommended. Keel-boat installations should place it 300–600 mm ahead of the keel, while long-keel vessels should favor the center of the boat, away from the keel, at the point of minimal deadrise. Avoid turbulence zones (propellers, strakes, through-hull fittings, water intakes or discharges, hull irregularities) and maintain a distance of over 600 mm from any other transducer. Installing the sonar in a hull area with a deadrise angle under 6° is recommended to ensure continuous immersion and accessibility from inside the vessel. Electromagnetic and acoustic interference must be minimized through proper cable routing and adequate grounding. Software updates are performed via a memory card loaded from a Windows computer or a preloaded card provided by Garmin support.
