Detailed description
Detailed description
Designed for demanding marine electrical systems, the BLUE SEA HD-Series Heavy Duty 3-position battery selector switch with AFD, part number 11003, allows selection between two isolated battery banks (OFF, 1 or 2) for power supply or emergency starting. Part of the HD (Heavy Duty) series, it differs from the m-Series (300A continuous) and e-Series (350A continuous) by its ability to handle higher currents, with a continuous rating of 500A, an intermittent rating of 700A (5 min), and a starting current of 1,600A (30 sec). This positioning makes it suitable for applications requiring enhanced electrical robustness, particularly for large diesel engines and high-consumption systems.
Advanced protection and robust connectivity
One of the technical features of the 11003-BSS selector switch is its Alternator Field Disconnect (AFD) function, which protects the alternator diodes from destructive overvoltages if the switch is toggled to the OFF position while the engine is running. This safety is critical for equipment longevity. The device also features "Make-Before-Break" contact design, allowing seamless switching between battery banks without interrupting power supply—a key feature for sensitive electronic equipment.
Marine design and regulatory compliance
The terminals, made of tinned copper, are sized M12-1.75 (1/2") and offer a length of 22.22 mm (7/8") to accommodate multiple cable lugs. Their one-piece design reduces the risk of overheating and loosening over time. The recommended tightening torque is 24.86 N·m (220 in-lb). The selector switch accepts 4/0 AWG (120 mm²) battery cables to meet its rated values, with the option to connect two cables to the common terminal to meet the assigned value. Its design allows for surface or rear-panel mounting, with mounting holes accepting 1/4" (M6) screws. The 11003-BSS model complies with ABYC requirements, is UL Listed (UL 1107), UL 1500, and SAE J1171 for ignition protection, and is CE marked per ISO 8846, ensuring safe use in marine environments. It also features IP66 protection against water and dust intrusion.
