Detailed description
The FURUNO DRS4W radar is a compact 4 kW radome designed for wireless navigation, offering a standalone detection solution. It stands out for its ability to directly broadcast radar images to iOS devices such as iPads and iPhones, via its integrated WiFi connectivity on the 2.4 GHz band.
Technical specifications and performance
With an output power of 4 kW and a radar frequency of 9410 ± 30 MHz, the DRS4W is listed in the Furuno catalog with a range of 36 NM; in practice, the effective detection range is around 24 nautical miles depending on target size and conditions, with display scales ranging from 0.125 to 24 NM. Its Ø488 mm (19-inch) radome integrates a 19-inch antenna, providing a horizontal beam width of 7.2° and vertical beam width of 25°. The system is powered by 12–24 VDC, with a maximum consumption of 2.1 A at 12 V or 1.0 A at 24 V, equating to an electrical consumption of 24 to 25.2 W.
Connectivity and user interface
The DRS4W radar allows simultaneous connection of two iOS devices via its IEEE 802.11 b/g/n wireless network. The nominal wireless connectivity range is 10 meters (or 5 meters, including 2 meters through fiberglass or wood). The dedicated "Marine Radar" application, available on the App Store, features a user interface compatible with iOS 6.1.3 or later (iPhone 5, 5c, 5s; iPad 2, 3, 4, mini). It includes radar display functions, including a guard zone alarm and menus for image adjustment, color, and radar settings.
Installation and robustness
Installation of the DRS4W is simplified thanks to its "Plug and Play" design, requiring only a connection to the power cable. The WiFi code needed for connection is provided in the packaging. Its weight of 5.7 kg and dimensions of 488 mm in diameter and 220 mm in height facilitate integration. The device is designed to operate within a temperature range of -25°C to +55°C and has an IP26 protection rating, protecting it against powerful water jets and dust. It is certified FCC Class B, Industry Canada (RSS 210), and IEC 60945 4th edition (vibration).
