Detailed description
Detailed description
Designed for safety and optimized navigation, the Garmin GMR Fantom 18x radome is a compact 18-inch solid-state radar system. It stands out with 50 watts (peak) power and the ability to detect targets up to 48 nautical miles, while offering close-range detection as close as 6 meters. Integrated into the Fantom range, this model brings notable innovations to recreational boaters and demanding sailors.
Solid-state technology and advanced detection
The GMR Fantom 18x uses solid-state technology, providing fast antenna rotation up to 60 rpm for dynamic image refresh. Its beam width of 5.2 degrees horizontal by 25 degrees vertical ensures precise coverage. MotionScope™ is a key feature, using Doppler effect to identify and color moving targets directly on the chartplotter screen, making it easier to anticipate vessel movements or weather fronts. This function is also useful for fishing, helping to spot flocks of birds on the surface via Auto Bird Gain.
Operational features and network integration
For increased operational flexibility, the Garmin GMR Fantom 18x radar integrates Dual Range, allowing simultaneous display of short- and long-range views with independent settings. The Power Save and Timed Transmit modes offer fine-tuned power consumption management, with standby consumption of 4W max and 24W max in energy-saving transmission mode (33W max in normal mode). The True Echo Trails function displays the historical trajectories of targets, while Dynamic Auto Gain and Dynamic Sea Filter automatically adjust parameters for optimal performance in various conditions. The system supports radar overlay on charts (Radar Overlay) and automatic MARPA acquisition of up to 30 targets (requires an external heading sensor). Integration is via Garmin BlueNet™ and Garmin Marine Network networks.
Robust design and technical specifications
With overall dimensions of 508.2 x 504.7 x 248.3 mm (L x W x H) and a net weight of 6.35 kg, the GMR Fantom 18x radome is designed to withstand marine environments with IPX7 waterproof rating. It operates on a voltage range of 10 to 32V DC. The safe distance from a compass is 97 cm. This model, more compact than its counterpart the GMR Fantom 24x, is ideal for medium-sized vessels seeking a high-performance, energy-efficient solid-state radar.
