Detailed description
Detailed description
The Garmin gWind™ wind vane anemometer is a wind sensor designed to provide accurate data on wind speed and angle to your navigation system. Unlike standalone NMEA 2000 sensors, the gWind™ requires the Garmin GND™ 10 interface to transmit its data to your boat’s NMEA 2000 network. This requirement positions the gWind™ as a key component within the Garmin ecosystem, necessitating system integration.
Integration and Performance with the GND™ 10 Interface
The GND™ 10 interface acts as an essential bridge, connecting Nexus network devices, such as the gWind™, to your NMEA 2000 network. This gateway is critical for acquiring and sharing wind data. The GND™ 10 also provides USB connectivity to a computer, enabling advanced calibration of wind sensors, including the gWind Race™, via the NexusRace™ software. The data can then be used with third-party navigation programs such as Expedition and Adrena, offering increased flexibility for demanding users.
The technical specifications of the GND™ 10 include compact dimensions of 170 x 90 x 50 mm for a weight of 196 g, an extended operating temperature range from -15°C to 70°C, and a safety distance for the compass of 10 cm. It features an IPX7 waterproof rating, ensuring resistance to accidental immersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. Its NMEA 2000 power consumption is a maximum of 1.1 W, with an input voltage of 9 to 16 Vdc and an NMEA 2000 LEN of 4 to 9 Vdc.
Installation and Configuration
The gWind™ is installed on a horizontal surface at the masthead, facing forward and parallel to the boat’s centerline. The transducer comes with a mounting bracket and screws, as well as a Nexus mast cable with a field-installable connector, allowing you to adjust the cable length to your installation. Configuration of the gWind™, including wind angle offset adjustment and speed and angle filters, is performed via a Garmin NMEA 2000-compatible marine instrument, such as a GMI™ 20, after connection to the GND™ 10 interface.
Maintenance of the sensor is simple, requiring only cleaning with a mild soapy solution and rinsing with water, without using detergents or high-pressure cleaners.
