Detailed description
Detailed description
The JL Audio MX500/4 marine amplifier is a four-channel audio solution designed for marine environments and motorized sports. It uses JL Audio’s NexD™ Class D switching technology to deliver 500 watts RMS, distributed across four channels. Its design is optimized for high-fidelity audio performance without overloading the vessel’s charging systems.
Audio performance and marine robustness
This amplifier delivers 70 watts RMS x 4 at 4 ohms, 125 watts RMS x 4 at 2 ohms, or 250 watts RMS x 2 in bridged mode at 4 ohms. Its frequency response ranges from 20 Hz to 20 kHz (+0, -1 dB) with a signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 88 dB (A-weighted). The total harmonic distortion (THD+N) is below 1% at 2 ohms per channel. To accommodate different speaker configurations, it includes adjustable high-pass and low-pass filters (35–300 Hz, 12 dB/octave).
Built for durability in marine environments, the MX500/4 amplifier features a compact die-cast aluminum chassis resistant to corrosion, with a powder-coated finish. It is rated IPX7 for water resistance, supporting immersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes, provided the control panel cover is properly installed. The balanced differential inputs help minimize noise induced by cables, a key advantage in marine installations. An advanced protection system (Advanced Rollback Protection System) prevents thermal shutdown in extreme conditions.
Integration and installation
The amplifier is compatible with 12-volt negative-ground electrical systems. It accepts both low-level (RCA, 250 mV–4 V RMS) and high-level (750 mV–15 V RMS) input signals, enabling integration with various audio sources. For power, a 4 AWG gauge cable is recommended for both positive and negative leads. An external 50 A fuse (AFS, AGU, or MaxiFuse™) must be installed within 45 cm of the battery’s positive terminal. Its compact dimensions (237 mm L x 45 mm H x 115 mm D) facilitate installation in tight spaces. The unit ships with four stainless steel mounting screws and a user manual.
