Detailed description

The McMurdo FASTFIND 220 personal locator beacon (PLB) is a compact safety device designed for individual distress situations. It integrates an advanced GNSS receiver compatible with GPS(L1) and GALILEO(E1) at 72 channels, featuring a ceramic patch antenna for precise location. Its small size (34 x 47 x 106 mm) and lightweight (152 g) make it easy to carry.

Transmission performance and battery life

The FASTFIND 220 transmits a distress signal on the 406.031 MHz frequency with a 5 W output and a homing signal on 121.5 MHz with a nominal 50 mW output. Its lithium manganese battery provides an emission duration exceeding 24 hours at -20 °C. Battery shelf life is 6 years. Battery replacement must be performed by an authorized service center, and its use is logged by a microprocessor.

Robust design and safety features

The beacon is waterproof to 10 meters immersion for 5 minutes and operates within a temperature range of -20 to +55 °C, with storage temperatures from -30 to +70 °C. It supports altitudes up to 12,192 meters (40,000 ft). For visual detection, it includes a high-brightness LED flash capable of emitting an SOS Morse code signal for 30 uses. Activation is manual in three steps. A self-diagnostic function tests transmitters, battery, and flash. The beacon is Category 2, meaning it does not float and must be kept in its supplied float pouch. The standard compass safe distance is 1 meter.

Additional information

The FASTFIND 220 complies with COSPAS-SARSAT T.001/T.007 Class 2, RTCM 11010.2, ETSI EN 302152-1, AS/NZS 4280.2, and NSS-PLB11 standards. The product contains a lithium metal battery (lithium content exceeding 2 g and total net weight of 0.068 kg), subject to dangerous goods transport regulations under Class 9 (UN3091). A one-year warranty is included, extendable to four additional years with online registration within 90 days of purchase.

Expert opinion

Frequently Asked Questions

Need help? Contact us

Is the FASTFIND 220 beacon waterproof and does it float?

Yes, the FASTFIND 220 beacon is waterproof. It can withstand immersion up to 10 meters for 5 minutes. However, the beacon itself does not float. It is rated as Category 2 for buoyancy. To ensure it floats, it must be kept in the supplied floating pouch (buoyancy pouch).

What is the battery life and lifespan of the FastFind 220 beacon?

The FastFind 220 beacon is equipped with a lithium manganese battery. It provides a transmission duration of over 24 hours at -20 °C. The battery lifespan in storage is 6 years from the date of manufacture. Battery replacement must be performed by an authorized service center, and its use is logged by a microprocessor.

Do I need to register my personal FastFind 220 beacon, and how?

Yes, registering your personal FastFind 220 beacon is mandatory. This registration is critical because it allows rescue services to access your personal and contact information in the event of beacon activation, facilitating search and rescue operations.

The registration process and the relevant authorities vary depending on the country of use. For example, in France, you must contact the FMCC CNES or use their online registration service. Specific registration information is provided in the documentation supplied with your beacon.

What transmission frequencies does the FastFind 220 beacon use, and what positioning system does it integrate?

The FastFind 220 beacon uses two main transmission frequencies:

An alert signal on the 406.031 MHz frequency with a power output of 5 W. A homing signal on the 121.5 MHz frequency with a nominal power output of 50 mW. For location, it integrates an advanced 72-channel GNSS receiver compatible with GPS (L1) and GALILEO (E1) systems. This receiver features a ceramic patch antenna for rapid acquisition and precise localization.

How can I test my FastFind 220 beacon to ensure it is functioning correctly?

The FastFind 220 beacon is equipped with self-diagnostic functions to check its status. You can perform:

A transmission test to verify the transmitters. A battery test to check its charge level. A flash test to ensure the strobe light is functioning correctly. A GNSS signal acquisition test. To activate the test, the "TEST" button must be pressed firmly. If necessary, you can use a non-sharp object such as a pencil. Refer to the user manual for detailed instructions on performing these tests and interpreting the results.
