Detailed description
Detailed description
The Simrad Pro RF14XU rudder angle sensor is a robust and durable feedback unit designed for marine autopilot systems and rudder angle indicators. Its design features a non-flammable polyester housing reinforced with fiberglass and a seawater-resistant aluminum mounting plate, ensuring durability in marine environments. The unit’s material is Arnite T06 200 PBT.
Features and performance
The RF14XU provides dual outputs for versatile integration. It generates a variable-frequency signal, primarily intended for Simrad autopilots, with a reference frequency of 3400 Hz at mid-position. This signal varies at a rate of 20 Hz per degree of rudder movement, increasing toward port and decreasing toward starboard. Simultaneously, it provides a voltage output proportional to the rudder angle for dedicated indicators, with a variation of ±9 volts around half the supply voltage.
Technical specifications
The unit requires a 24 V DC power supply (with a tolerance of -10% to +30%), although compatibility with 12/24 V DC +/-20% has been noted for earlier versions. Its current consumption is 100 mA. The sensor is designed to operate within a temperature range of -25 °C to +55 °C and can be stored from -30 °C to +70 °C. It features IP56 waterproofing. The product weighs 2.8 kg. The supplied cable is 15 meters long and equipped with a connector. The transmission linkage is made of 345 mm stainless steel with two ball joints, ensuring a 1:1 transmission ratio. The sensor includes a double set of micro-switches that can serve as electrical limit switches for the steering system. The usable rudder angle for signal control is ±90 degrees, although the shaft can rotate through 360 degrees. Accuracy is ±0.25° within ±5°, and ±0.5° beyond that, with a repeatability of ±0.1°. The safe distance from the compass is 1.0 m. Installation is flexible, allowing horizontal, vertical, or inverted mounting.
