The Victron Energy SmartShunt 500A IP21 is an all-in-one battery monitor designed for installations requiring precise monitoring without bulk. Unlike traditional BMV battery monitors such as the BMV-712, the SmartShunt has no built-in display, instead using your smartphone or tablet as the display interface via the VictronConnect app. This approach reduces wiring and simplifies integration into tight spaces.
Connectivity and Monitoring Functions
This SmartShunt provides Bluetooth connectivity for direct access to battery parameters via the VictronConnect app. It allows you to view state of charge, remaining autonomy, and historical data. Alternatively, it can be connected to a Victron Energy GX device via a VE.Direct cable, such as the Color Control GX, for full integration into an energy management system. The SmartShunt features a VE.Direct port and an auxiliary connection for monitoring a second battery, midpoint monitoring, or connecting an optional temperature sensor (ASS000100000).

Current measurements are accurate to ± 0.4% with a resolution of ± 0.01 A, and voltage measurements to ± 0.3% with a resolution of ± 0.01 V. The IP21 protection rating of this model indicates protection against solid objects larger than 12.5 mm and vertically falling water droplets. The shunt’s connection bolts are M10 for the 500A model, ensuring a robust connection.
Differences with BMVs and System Integration
Compared to the BMV-712 battery monitor, the SmartShunt has no programmable visual or audible alarms or programmable relays. These functions are managed via the VictronConnect app or a GX device, offering increased flexibility for users preferring a digital interface. It logs trends in voltage, current, state of charge, and auxiliary input (temperature, midpoint deviation, or starter battery voltage) over 46 days. Bluetooth range may be affected by conductive elements; a solution is adding a VE.Direct Bluetooth dongle (ASS030536011) if necessary.
