Detailed description
Detailed description
The Pod Drive 3.0 Evo is a direct-drive electric pod propulsion unit mounted under the hull, designed for sailboats and small vessels. It delivers 3 kW, equivalent to a 6 HP thermal engine according to ePropulsion, and operates at 48 V (input range: 39 to 60 V).
Specifications
The motor runs at 2,300 rpm at nominal speed and drives a two-blade composite propeller measuring 10.2 × 6.7 inches. The manufacturer claims a maximum overall efficiency of 51 %. The unit weighs 15.3 kg. The drive is direct, with no gearbox.
Hydrogeneration
Under sail, the propeller drives the motor to recharge the battery, but only with an ePropulsion battery. The function activates when the throttle is in neutral, the battery is charged below 90 %, and the boat exceeds 6 km/h steadily for 4 seconds; it stops above 45 km/h or when the battery exceeds 90 %. It is enabled by default and can be disabled from the Evo control unit.
What to provide
The Pod Drive 3.0 Evo is sold as a motor only: the battery, control unit, and charger are not included. It accepts a 48 V lead-acid or lithium battery, but hydrogeneration is only available with an ePropulsion battery from the E series. It is controlled with an Evo control unit (remote control, side-mounted control, or dual control), whose screen displays power, remaining range, and battery level. Installation requires drilling the hull and mounting the control module aboard: it must be performed by a professional.
Safety
Below 42 V, the system limits power; below 39 V, the pod stops to protect the battery from deep discharge. A magnetic circuit breaker enables emergency shutdown, and a paired safety lanyard triggers a visual and audible alarm if it falls into the water.
