From Glasgow to today
Alfred Mylne (1872-1951) founded A. Mylne & Co. in Glasgow in 1896 at the age of 24, after an apprenticeship at Napier, Shanks and Bell and a position as draughtsman at George Lennox Watson — architect of the royal yachtBritanniaThe firm is the oldest continuously operating yacht naval architecture office. The succession was ensured by Alfred Mylne II (senior partner from 1945), then by Ian Nicolson (partner in 1959). The office now operates under the name Mylne Yacht Design (Marine Design International Ltd).
Metre-class and international rating
Mylne contributed to the establishment of the International Metre Rule in 1906 and designed several generations of metre-class yachts: four 15-Metre, the 12-MetreCyra, the 19-MetreOctavia (1911), the 12-MetreMarina (1935), the 8-MetreRaven. At the 1908 Olympic Games — the only edition held in Scotland before 2012 — Mylne sailed the 12-MetreMouchette; his apprentice Thomas Glen-Coats won gold onHera.
