A 16 m strip-planking motor yacht by Patrick Balta

Sanday is a 16-metre motor yacht designed by naval architect Patrick Balta, built in moulded wood using the strip-planking technique (yellow cedar strips laminated with glass/epoxy, marine plywood superstructures, balsa sandwich roof). It belongs to the MY 16 trawler line that Balta designed for offshore cruising with a small crew.

Hull design and architecture

Patrick Balta is known for his fast, low-consumption hulls and his work with moulded wood. The MY 16 platform has a beam of approximately 4.30 m and a draft of 1.30 m, with a displacement ranging from 12.7 to 16 t depending on outfit. The reference propulsion for this hull combines a 180 hp Volvo D4 shaft drive with a backup Volvo D2 sail-drive, achieving a cruising speed of 8–9 knots at around 11 l/h.

Program and navigation

The boat is equipped for long-range cruising with a small crew, featuring a fuel capacity of around 2,400 l and an endurance suitable for Mediterranean crossings to Northern Europe. The CE design category B / 6 persons places it in the medium-range coastal and offshore programmes.
