Detailed description
Detailed description
The Garmin GCV™ 20 is an external scanning sonar housing designed to enhance the underwater detection capabilities of compatible chartplotters via the Garmin marine network. Positioned as a dedicated module, it features advanced ClearVü™ and SideVü™ CHIRP sonar technologies, enabling detailed and near-photographic visualization of submerged structures, fish, and the seabed. Unlike integrated sonar combos, the GCV 20 functions as a "black box" solution for users seeking to add or upgrade these features without replacing their primary display.
Advanced Sonar Performance
This sonar housing delivers an RMS transmission power of 500 W, utilizing CHIRP frequencies of 260, 455, 820, and 1120 kHz. For Garmin ClearVü™ technology, it achieves a maximum depth of 152 m (500 ft) at 260 kHz, 91 m (300 ft) at 455 kHz, and 61 m (200 ft) at 820 kHz. In SideVü™ mode, performance is similar at 260 kHz and 455 kHz, with a maximum range of 61 m (200 ft) at 820 kHz and 38 m (125 ft) at 1120 kHz. These specifications set it apart from traditional sonar units by providing superior clarity and target separation, essential for fishing and exploring complex seabeds.
Robust Design and System Integration
The GCV 20 is built with a fully waterproof polycarbonate housing, meeting IEC 60529 IPX7 waterproofing standards, ensuring resistance to accidental immersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. Its dimensions are 192 x 251 x 66 mm and it weighs 845 g. It operates across an extended temperature range from -15°C to 70°C, with a power input of 10 to 35 VDC and a maximum power consumption of 10.5 W. A safety distance of 260 mm from the compass is recommended. Integration with the Garmin marine system is straightforward, as the GCV 20 connects directly to your chartplotter’s marine network or via a GMS™ 10 network port expander, ensuring broad compatibility and flexible installation.
