Detailed description
Detailed description
Designed for sailboats with a displacement up to 13 tonnes (28,500 lbs), the Garmin linear actuator type 1 (part number 010-11572-00) is a standalone mechanical drive unit. It is specifically engineered for seamless integration with Garmin autopilots GHP 12, GHP Reactor, and Reactor Mechanical, providing a precise and reliable steering solution for sailing navigation.
Performance and technical integration
This linear actuator features a maximum thrust of 400 kg (800 lbs) and a stroke of 303 mm (12 inches), ensuring responsive rudder movements. Its centered dimensions are 820 x 165 x 155 mm. It operates on a supply voltage of 10 V to 30 V, with an average clutch current consumption of 0.5 A at 12 V and a motor consumption of 1 to 2 A at 12 V. The operating temperature range is from -15 °C to 60 °C (5 °F to 140 °F). Unlike hydraulic or electromagnetic units, this mechanical actuator offers targeted efficiency for its segment. The GHP 12 system, to which it is connected, includes NMEA 2000 connectivity, facilitating installation and heading data sharing with other Garmin devices on the network.
Safety and precision with integrated rudder angle sensor
The Garmin linear actuator type 1 is compatible with an external rudder angle sensor (such as the Garmin GRF 10), enabling rudder position display on the autopilot controller. This feature contributes to smoother maneuvers, reduces the risk of overcompensation, and prevents excessive wear or damage to the actuator at end stops. It is critical that physical stops (not included) limit the actuator stroke to 294 mm (11.57 inches) to avoid damaging the unit. Installation of this Class A drive unit requires careful attention to its environment, as it is not water-resistant and must be mounted in a dry location, protected from splashes and immersion. For similar installations on larger vessels or requiring different thrust ratings, Garmin offers other actuators (Type 2, Type 3) suitable for higher displacements, positioning this Type 1 model as the solution dedicated to mid-sized sailboats.
