Detailed description
Detailed description
The Garmin Reactor™ 40 kit without GHC™ 20 is the core of the autopilot system for vessels equipped with mechanical, retrocompatible, or solenoid steering. Designed for seamless integration into an existing NMEA 2000® network, this kit targets users who already own a compatible Garmin chartplotter, eliminating the need for a dedicated GHC™ 20 display and providing a flexible, cost-effective solution for upgrading or installing an autopilot.
Integration and technical compatibility
This kit includes the Control and Command Unit (CCU) and the Electronic Control Unit (ECU), essential for the Reactor 40 system operation. It is compatible with a wide range of steering systems, including Garmin Class A and B drive units, as well as third-party or existing solenoid drive units. Initial setup is performed using the Dockside Wizard and Sea Trial Wizard assistants, accessible from a compatible Garmin chartplotter connected to the same NMEA 2000 network. These assistants guide the user through selecting the drive unit class, adjusting tensions (drive unit, clutch, solenoid, bypass valve), and calibrating the rudder angle sensor.
Advanced features and configuration
The system supports rudder angle sensor calibration and the ability to enable the Shadow Drive™ function (requires a separately sold Shadow Drive™ valve for hydraulic systems). It also allows selecting the speed source between the NMEA 2000 tachometer, GPS (external antenna recommended for optimal accuracy), or no source. The ECU requires a 12 to 24 Vdc power supply, while the NMEA 2000 network requires a 9 to 16 Vdc source. The CCU must be mounted in a non-submerged location, away from magnetic interference, to ensure optimal performance, positioning this kit as a modular alternative to full packs like the Reactor 40 with GHC 20 for customized installation and advanced integration.
