Detailed description
Detailed description
The Reactor™ 40 Compact autopilot starter pack for hydraulic steering from Garmin is designed to provide precise and reliable navigation for vessels equipped with hydraulic steering systems. This system represents an advanced autopilot solution, featuring simplified configuration features for optimal commissioning. It stands out within the Reactor 40 range due to its compact format, specifically targeting vessels where space is limited, while maintaining the performance expected from a Garmin autopilot, comparable to other high-end autopilot systems on the market.
Configuration and system integration
Installing the Reactor™ 40 Compact requires marine expertise due to the complexity of hydraulic and electrical systems. However, Garmin has simplified the commissioning phase with intuitive configuration assistants. The Dockside Wizard guides the user through initial settings such as vessel type, rudder lock, rudder deflection value, and rudder sensor calibration. The Sea Trial Wizard, in turn, allows calibration of essential sensors under real-world conditions, including compass calibration and the Autotune procedure to optimize autopilot performance based on the boat's specific dynamics.
Sensors and NMEA 2000 connectivity
The system's core, the Course Computer Unit (CCU), is the main sensor of the Reactor 40 Compact. Its positioning is critical: it must be mounted on a rigid surface, away from any potential magnetic interference (iron, magnets, high-current cables, pumps). Mounting screws are provided, but a location test with a handheld compass is recommended. Connection to the NMEA 2000 network is essential for the CCU and the control head, enabling integration with other Garmin or compatible equipment, such as chartplotters for configuration or speed sources (NMEA 2000 tachometer, external GPS). The Shadow Drive, a sensor to be installed in the hydraulic lines, detects manual helm control, automatically suspending autopilot operation. If Shadow Drive is not installed, a manual SPST switch (not included) can be used. The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) must be mounted within 0.5 m of the hydraulic pump, in a non-submersible location, with a direct power supply from the boat's battery. The alarm must be mounted near the main helm station. This system ensures a complete and adaptable installation for various hydraulic boat configurations.
