Detailed description
Detailed description
The MASTERVOLT MLI Ultra Lithium 24/5500 battery, although now obsolete and replaced by the MLI Ultra 24/6000 (reference 66026000), was a cutting-edge energy storage solution for demanding marine applications. Designed to deliver extreme performance even in harsh conditions, this lithium-ion battery featured Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) chemistry renowned for its safety and longevity.
Technologies and performance
With a nominal voltage of 26.4 V and a capacity of 200 Ah, providing a nominal energy of 5500 Wh (5.5 kWh), the MLI Ultra 24/5500 could handle heavy loads over extended periods. Its proprietary Battery Management System (BMS) ensured precise cell voltage balancing, protected against overcharging, deep discharging, and monitored temperature. This advanced BMS also enabled communication via MasterBus, CZone, and NMEA 2000, facilitating seamless integration with MASTERVOLT energy management systems and other onboard equipment. The battery offered a lifespan of 3500 cycles at 80 % depth of discharge (DOD) at 25 °C, significantly outperforming traditional batteries.
Charge and discharge capabilities
The MLI Ultra 24/5500 stood out for its high charge and discharge rates, with a maximum charge current of 200 A (recommended <= 60 A) and a maximum continuous discharge current of 500 A, peaking at 1800 A for 10 seconds. This high power handling capability made it ideal for applications requiring instantaneous power delivery. The automatic balancing algorithm predicted cell behavior for faster, more efficient charging, optimizing overall battery lifespan. Fast charging in 60 minutes was a notable feature of this range. Specific charge settings (bulk/absorption voltage at 28.5 V, float voltage at 27.0 V) were recommended with MASTERVOLT chargers.
Design and system integration
The MLI Ultra 24/5500’s electronic housing featured IP65 protection, ensuring excellent resistance to water and dust. Weighing 55 kg with dimensions of 622 x 197 x 355 mm, it allowed up to 70 % space savings and weight reduction compared to equivalent lead-acid batteries. Parallel connection was unlimited, and up to 10 batteries could be connected in series, though systems exceeding 48 V required a separate battery enclosure for safety. Compliant with UN38.3, CE, E-mark standards, and with DNV-GL certification pending at the time, it was a reliable choice for marine installations. As with all MLI Ultra models, an external safety relay, such as the 7702B-BSS, was required for optimal system protection.
