Designed for sailboats equipped with a wheel, the RAYMARINE Evolution Wheel Pilot T70248 provides a complete autopilot solution, integrating the ACU-100 control unit and Wheel Drive. This system is part of Raymarine’s Evolution range, known for its EV-1 sensor technology and SeaTalk NG network integration. It is positioned as a dedicated option for small to medium-sized vessels where a wheel is the primary steering interface, offering an alternative to more complex hydraulic or linear systems often used on larger vessels (handled by ACU-200, ACU-300, or ACU-400).

EV-1 sensor technology for precise heading

At the heart of the Evolution system is the EV-1 sensor, a compact unit that measures heading, pitch, roll, and yaw with a 9-axis frequency. This architecture enables the autopilot to precisely monitor the vessel’s movements and adapt to sea conditions without requiring complex initial calibration. Unlike traditional autopilots that need manual calibration or GPS data to optimize performance, the EV-1 continuously adjusts its algorithm to maintain a stable heading, even in rapidly changing environmental conditions.

ACU-100 control unit

The ACU-100 control unit is the interface between the EV-1 sensor, the SeaTalk NG network, and the wheel drive actuator. Specifically sized for low-power applications, the ACU-100 is compatible with Type 1 cylinders, handling direct currents suitable for wheel pilots. It integrates the necessary power circuits to power and control the Wheel Drive while being powered by the vessel’s 12 V DC network. Its design allows for discreet installation below deck, optimizing protection against marine elements. For systems requiring higher power or different cylinder types, Raymarine offers the ACU-200 (for Type 1 and 2 cylinders) and ACU-400 (for Type 2 and 3 cylinders).

Wheel Drive for wheel steering

The Wheel Drive included in this kit is a mechanical actuator designed to fit directly onto the wheel rim. It provides the torque necessary to maneuver the wheel, enabling the autopilot to take control of the boat’s steering. This type of actuator is particularly suited to cruising sailboats where space is optimized and a non-invasive installation is preferred. The integration of the ACU-100 and Wheel Drive ensures optimized compatibility and performance for this configuration. Note that the complete system requires a compatible Raymarine multifunction display (MFD) or a dedicated control unit for configuration and operation.
