The Victron Energy 12.8V/50Ah Smart lithium-iron-phosphate (LiFePO4) battery is designed for demanding marine and off-grid applications. Part of the Lithium Battery Smart range, it delivers a nominal voltage of 12.8 V and a capacity of 50 Ah, providing a nominal energy of 640 Wh at 25 °C. This LiFePO4 technology outperforms lead-acid batteries by allowing partial discharge without significant impact on lifespan and offering a round-trip energy efficiency of 92 %, compared to 80 % for lead-acid.
Integration and performance
The battery includes a cell monitoring and balancing system, essential for optimizing lifespan and performance. It can be wired in series and/or parallel to create 12 V, 24 V, or 48 V battery banks, with a limit of 20 batteries per system, enabling a maximum storage capacity of 84 kWh in a 12 V system. For safe operation, a Victron Energy Battery Management System (BMS) is required, with six models available for various configurations. The 12.8V/50Ah Smart battery supports a maximum continuous discharge current of 100 A (recommended ≤50 A) and a maximum charge current of 100 A (recommended ≤30 A), with a recommended charge voltage of 14.2 V and a float voltage of 13.5 V.
Durability and monitoring
LiFePO4 batteries excel in longevity, with a lifespan of 2500 cycles at 80 % depth of discharge (DoD) and up to 5000 cycles at 50 % DoD. They operate reliably across a wide temperature range: -20 °C to +50 °C during discharge and +5 °C to +50 °C during charging. Cell voltage, temperature, and alarm monitoring are simplified via Bluetooth connectivity and the VictronConnect app, enabling quick diagnosis of issues such as cell imbalance. Its compact dimensions and lightweight design allow flexible installation, though it must be protected from the elements (IP22). Compared to other Smart range models like the 12.8V/100Ah or 12.8V/160Ah, the 50Ah model offers a more compact and lighter solution, ideal for lower energy demands or modular systems requiring high flexibility.
