Detailed description

The Standard Horizon RAM4X (SSM-72H) wireless remote control unit is designed to extend the control of your GX2410GPSE or GX6000E marine VHF radio remotely. It provides a complete interface to manage the main functions of your VHF from anywhere on the boat, requiring the installation of a SCU-30 wireless access point to operate.

Robust and Clear Display

Built for the marine environment, the RAM4X is submersible to IPX8 standards, withstanding immersion to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes. Its Full Dot Matrix display ensures information readability even in low-light conditions thanks to Day and Night display modes. The unit is also equipped with an integrated 1800 mAh Lithium-ion battery with a nominal voltage of 3.7 V, and operates within a temperature range of –20°C to +60°C.

Connectivity and Extended Functions

The RAM4X remote control uses a wireless network to enable remote control of multiple functions of the main radio, including transmit power switching (25 W or 1 W), channel group adjustments. It also integrates intercom and foghorn functions with preprogrammed signals and a listening function. The RAM4X offers noise suppression for transmit and receive audio, and a voice scrambler with 32 or 4 codes.

Advanced Navigation and Communication Control

With the RAM4X remote control, you can manage DSC (Digital Selective Calling) distress, all-ships, individual, and group calls, as well as position requests and reports. It also allows displaying GPS and AIS information, configuring CPA/TCPA alarms, and interfacing with NMEA 2000 systems. Users can also access navigation functions such as waypoint management and Group Monitoring (GM) operation. Customization is possible via display, contrast, ringtone settings, and key assignments. It is supplied with a belt clip mount and lanyard.

Expert opinion

« Wireless VHF extension: flexibility and safety on board »

The Standard Horizon RAM4X wireless handset (SSM-72H) is a strategically functional extension for GX2410GPSE and GX6000E marine VHF systems. It allows full remote control of the radio, which is particularly relevant for vessels requiring communication from multiple points, such as the bow for anchoring or the flybridge. This mobility enhances safety by enabling the operator to maintain VHF contact while moving around the deck.

Integrating the RAM4X into the system requires installing the SCU-30 wireless access point to establish the wireless network. It is crucial to ensure the GX6000 firmware is up to date to guarantee optimal compatibility and access to all features. The handset's robustness, certified to IPX8, ensures resistance to water spray and temporary immersion, a critical feature for use in marine environments where exposure to the elements is constant.

This type of wireless handset differs from wired secondary stations by the freedom of movement it provides. It is ideal for crews who wish to remain connected to their main VHF system without being tied to a fixed station. The internal battery’s 1800 mAh capacity offers sufficient usage time for routine maneuvers. However, the wireless signal range should be considered, which depends on the SCU-30’s location and the vessel’s layout, with a wireless signal range of up to 65 feet (approximately 20 meters).
