En savoir plus

Searchlights (or search lights) are high-intensity optics designed to identify distant objects at night: mooring buoys, navigation marks, man-overboard (MOB) crew, floating debris, or SAR operations. They emit a narrow beam (typically 10° to 25°) to concentrate light power on the target area — unlike deck lights, which provide broad, short-range illumination.

Use cases

  • MOB (man-overboard) search at night: scanning the sea downstream of the estimated position, spotting the reflective vest or flare
  • Identifying a mooring buoy in an unlit dead-end channel
  • Recognizing a dock or marina berth in the dark when approaching a harbor
  • Active signaling to another vessel to confirm presence or attract attention
  • Inspecting the hull exterior (rigging, halyards, sails) without going aloft

Technical criteria

  • Luminous power: 1000+ lumens minimum for practical use beyond 50 m. High-end models reach 3000 to 5000 lumens
  • Beam angle: 10° (highly concentrated, long range) to 25° (balance of range/width). Beyond 25°, it becomes a deck light, not a search light
  • Orientation mode: manual (handle), motorized (remote control from the helm), or radio remote
  • Waterproofing IP67 minimum: exposure to breaking waves and spray
  • Power consumption: 30 to 100W depending on power. Significant peak draw — ensure adequate wiring and protection

Regulations

Use of searchlights is governed by Rule 36 of COLREGs: they may be used to attract the attention of another vessel provided they do not create confusion with official signaling lights. Avoid sweeping a 360° beam near other boats — glare can cause collisions.

Skysat note: for offshore cruising or offshore racing, a searchlight with at least 1500 lumens is a major safety investment. Pair it with a remote control at the chart table to avoid having to go to the cockpit to scan the sea — a critical time-saver in MOB situations.
