AC/DC Converters: Stabilized power supply for your marine electronics

An AC/DC converter is an essential component of your onboard electrical system, allowing you to power your devices with direct current (DC) from an alternating current (AC) source, typically shore power or a generator. Choosing the right converter ensures the longevity of your marine electronics and optimal performance. At Skysat, we offer a carefully curated selection, based on our offshore racing experience, for reliable and high-performance system integration.

Here you will find robust and high-performance converters capable of delivering a stable and clean voltage, essential for sensitive equipment. We provide you with the technical information necessary to understand the specific features of each model and make the best choice for your needs.

choose the right conversion power

The AC/DC converter's power rating must be determined by the total power consumption of the devices you intend to power simultaneously. Undersizing will lead to power outages and premature aging of the converter, while oversizing will unnecessarily increase cost and size.

  • Mastervolt Mass Converters: Renowned for their robustness and high efficiency, they are suitable for large installations requiring a stable and reliable power supply.
  • Victron Energy Blue Smart IP22 Charger Inverters: Offer excellent charging quality and complete protection against overvoltage and short circuits. Ideal for small and medium-sized installations.
  • Calculating energy consumption: Add up the power consumption in Watts (W) of all devices to be powered simultaneously. Allow a safety margin of approximately 20% to anticipate peak consumption.
  • Output voltage: Make sure that the output voltage of the converter matches the supply voltage of your devices (usually 12V or 24V DC).

essential selection criteria

Several criteria, beyond just power output, must be considered when choosing an AC/DC converter. The type of regulation, the quality of the filtering, the integrated protections, and the robust construction are key factors in ensuring a stable and long-lasting power supply for your marine electronics.

  • Voltage regulation: Opt for converters with precise and stable voltage regulation to protect your sensitive equipment from voltage fluctuations.
  • Interference filtering: Good electromagnetic interference (EMI) filtering is crucial to avoid interference on other onboard electronic equipment.
  • Built-in protections: Check that the converter is equipped with protections against overvoltage, short circuits, overheating and reverse polarity.
  • Cooling: The cooling system (fan or natural convection) must be adapted to the marine environment (humidity, temperature).

installation and compatibility

Proper installation of the AC/DC converter is essential to ensure its correct operation and longevity. The electrical connection must be made in accordance with safety standards and taking into account the specific characteristics of your onboard installation. Verify the converter's compatibility with the other components of your electrical system.

  • Cable cross-section: Use cables of appropriate cross-section to support the converter's rated current, taking into account the cable length and permissible voltage drop.
  • Fuse protection: Install a suitable protective fuse on the input and output circuit of the converter to protect the device and the installation in case of a short circuit.
  • Grounding: Connect the converter to the boat's ground to ensure protection against electric shock.
  • Generator compatibility: If you are using a generator, check its compatibility with the converter (voltage and frequency).

💡 Skysat's advice

During installation, ensure the converter is well ventilated, as it generates heat. A well-ventilated location, protected from water splashes, will guarantee optimal equipment lifespan.
