Adhesives: Reliable assembly for durable marine electronics

In marine environments, assembly quality is paramount. A poorly insulated electrical connection, an insufficiently secured sensor, and the entire onboard electronic system can be compromised. At Skysat, drawing on our experience in offshore racing, we have selected adhesives and sealants specifically adapted to the demands of the marine environment. Here you will find proven solutions to guarantee the longevity of your installations.

surface preparation and adhesion

The adhesion of an adhesive is directly linked to surface preparation. Thorough degreasing and, if necessary, light sanding are essential to guarantee a lasting bond. Choosing the right adhesion primer, compatible with the materials being bonded, is also a crucial factor.

  • Degreasing cleaner for surfaces: Essential for removing oils, greases and other contaminants.
  • Adhesion primer for plastics: Improves adhesion on difficult plastics, such as polypropylene.
  • Fine grit sandpaper: To create a gripping surface without damaging materials.
  • Preparation wipes: Practical for quick and efficient cleaning.

marine-specific adhesives and sealants

The marine environment imposes specific constraints: humidity, temperature variations, vibrations, and UV exposure. The adhesives and sealants selected must withstand these stresses to guarantee a durable and watertight bond. The choice will depend on the materials to be joined (metal, plastic, wood, etc.) and the mechanical requirements.

  • Sikaflex 291i: Multi-purpose polyurethane sealant, ideal for sealing and flexible bonding.
  • Loctite 406: Cyanoacrylate adhesive for the rapid bonding of small components, particularly in electronics.
  • Neutral silicone sealant: For sealing through-hull fittings and other elements passing through the hull.
  • Two-component epoxy: For structural bonding requiring high mechanical resistance.

sealing and protection of connections

Sealing electrical connections is crucial to prevent corrosion and short circuits. Specific solutions exist to protect connectors and cables from saltwater infiltration. The use of sealing resins or heat-shrink tubing with integrated adhesive is recommended.

  • Sealing resin for connections: Effectively protects electrical connections against moisture.
  • Heat shrink tubing with adhesive: Ensures a perfect seal for cables and connectors.
  • Dielectric silicone grease: Protects electrical contacts from corrosion.
  • Self-amalgamating tape: For sealing cables and emergency repairs.

💡 Skysat's advice

Before gluing anything, test it on a small, inconspicuous area. This will allow you to check the compatibility of the materials and adjust the amount of glue needed. And remember, successful gluing starts with careful preparation!
