Fittings: reliable sealing on board

When sailing, a reliable marine plumbing system is crucial for fresh water supply, wastewater disposal, and the proper functioning of engine cooling systems. High-quality fittings guarantee the watertightness and durability of your installation. At Skysat, drawing on our experience in offshore racing, we select robust fittings that are resistant to marine corrosion and easy to install. Discover our range and ensure the longevity of your plumbing system.

choose the right material

Choosing the right material for your fittings is crucial to ensuring their durability in a harsh marine environment. Each material has its own advantages and limitations, which should be considered based on your boat's intended use and environment.

  • Chrome-plated brass: Robust, corrosion-resistant fittings suitable for freshwater and fuel systems. Check the quality of the chrome plating for optimal durability.
  • Bronze: An excellent choice for submerged applications and through-hull fittings, offering superior resistance to galvanic corrosion. Requires special care when assembling with other metals.
  • Plastic (PVC, Nylon): Lightweight and corrosion-resistant, ideal for low-pressure freshwater systems. Sensitive to UV radiation, choose UV-treated models.
  • 316L stainless steel: Exceptional corrosion resistance, particularly suited to aggressive saline environments. Compatible with most fluids used on board.

Types of fittings and their applications

There is a wide variety of fittings, each designed for a specific use. Choosing the right type of fitting is essential to ensure a leak-proof and durable connection, suited to the requirements of your installation.

  • Compression fittings: Easy to install and remove, ideal for quick connections and maintenance. Require precise tightening to ensure a leak-proof seal.
  • Screw fittings: Offer a robust and reliable connection, particularly suitable for applications requiring high pressure resistance. Use Teflon tape to ensure a tight seal.
  • Olive fittings: Provide a leak-proof connection without soldering, ideal for rigid pipes. Check the compatibility of the olive material with the fluid being conveyed.
  • Quick-connect fittings: For quick connection and disconnection of flexible hoses, often used for deck sprinkler systems. Pressure sensitive, check manufacturer's specifications.

compatibility and installation

Proper installation of fittings is essential to ensure the watertightness and reliability of your plumbing system. Incompatibility between materials can lead to galvanic corrosion and leaks.

  • Verification of material compatibility: Avoid assemblies of different metals without proper insulation to prevent galvanic corrosion.
  • Use of sealant paste or Teflon: Ensure the sealing of threaded fittings by applying a specific sealant paste or Teflon tape.
  • Proper tightening: Observe the tightening torques recommended by the manufacturer to avoid damaging the fittings or compromising the seal.
  • Regular inspection: Regularly check the condition of fittings and pipes to detect any leaks or signs of corrosion.

💡 Skysat's advice

When replacing a fitting, take the opportunity to inspect the condition of the adjacent pipe. A damaged or aging pipe can compromise the seal of the new fitting. Don't hesitate to replace it preventively.
