Alberto Bona

The synthesis of Italian engineering and oceanic rigor

Leading navigator and philosophy graduate, Alberto Bona has established himself on the international stage through a structured, almost scientific approach to offshore racing. His career illustrates a successful transition between Olympic circuits and offshore classes, marked by close collaboration with the most innovative design offices. Under the colors of the IBSA group, he leads an excellence project where technical preparation and data analysis are the pillars of his performance.

Profile & technical approach

Alberto Bona stands out for his cross-disciplinary technical expertise, acquired across a wide range of platforms, from the Mini 6.50 to the Figaro 3, and up to the Class40. His methodology is based on intensive use of polar diagrams and constant optimization of appendages. On his current Mach 40.5 IBSA, he prioritizes fine trim management to fully exploit the potential of scow-type hulls, which are particularly demanding in rough seas.

His technical expertise focuses on:

  • Aerodynamic analysis: Optimization of sail profiles to stabilize the center of aerodynamic thrust.
  • Appendage management: Precise adjustment of rudder incidence to minimize hydrodynamic drag.
  • Deck ergonomics: Layout of control lines to reduce reaction times during headsail changes.

Achievements & key milestones

Alberto Bona's achievements reflect a rapid rise in the Class40 circuit, with significant results from the very first races of boat #186:

  • 2022: Launch and reliability testing of the Class40 IBSA.
  • 2022: 8th place in the Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe.
  • 2023: Winner of the RORC Caribbean 600, demonstrating the Mach 40.5's superiority in reaching conditions in the tropics.
  • 2023: Winner of the Les Sables-Horta-Les Sables race, a major event validating the reliability of systems in the open ocean.
  • 2023: 3rd place in the Transat Jacques Vabre (double-handed with Pablo Santurde del Arco), confirming his place among the world elite in the category.
  • 2023: Class40 European Trophy champion, crowning an exceptionally consistent season.
