Detailed description
Detailed description
The B&G T1 12V hydraulic autopilot ram is a fully integrated linear drive unit designed for sailboats up to 12,000 kg displacement. This self-contained system combines a cylinder, pump, motor, clutch, and reservoir in a single, pre-filled, and sealed housing, eliminating the need for external hoses and tanks. It is specifically designed for use with B&G NAC-3 autopilot computers or earlier models such as the AC12.
Performance and technical specifications
Powered exclusively by 12V DC, the RAM-T1-12V jack delivers a maximum intermittent thrust of 700 kg. The stop-to-stop time for a full 255 mm stroke is 13 seconds (at a 5 kg load), making it a more deliberate choice than the T2 model (9 seconds), which is better suited for displacement boats. Typical current consumption is 2.0 A (at 60 kg, 25% duty cycle), reaching 19.0 A under an intermittent 650 kg load. The bit torque depends on the bit arm used: 120 kgm with a 190 mm arm, 140 kgm with a 213 mm arm, and 160 kgm with a 245 mm arm.
Design and installation
Designed for below-deck installation, the T1 hydraulic ram is protected against immersion with an IP67 rating. It weighs 8 kg. The design incorporates internal relief valves, rated at 62 bar (730 kg), to protect the system against impacts on the rudder. A quick-release clip (R-Clip) allows for emergency manual disengagement. Mounting is facilitated by a quick-release mounting bracket. The operating temperature range is -15 to +55 °C.
Compatibility and system
This actuator is optimized for mechanical steering systems that can be reverse-driven. The 12-watt solenoid clutch, controlled by the ECU, engages for autopilot mode and disengages for manual steering. The clutch connects via a DIN 43650 connector for 6-8 mm cable. The system uses a mineral hydraulic fluid of type ISO VG10 to VG40 (e.g., Fuchs Renolin B 15 HV1, Seastar HA5430). The product complies with EMC standard BS EN 60945:2002 and the flammability standard BS EN 28846:1993.
