Detailed description
Detailed description
The Garmin GMI/GNX 52 wired sail pack is an instrumentation solution designed for sailing navigation, integrating the critical GND 10 interface. This technical gateway is essential for connecting Nexus network devices, including advanced wind transducers such as the gWind Race™, to a standard NMEA 2000 network. This capability ensures seamless data integration for display on Garmin GMI/GNX marine instruments, as well as compatibility with third-party navigation software like Expedition and Adrena on a computer.
GND 10 Integration and Performance
At the core of this pack, the GND 10 is a compact and robust data converter. It not only transmits data from Nexus sensors to the NMEA 2000 network but also provides direct USB connectivity to a computer. This USB link is required for calibrating advanced wind transducers via the NexusRace™ software, ensuring optimal wind data accuracy. The GND 10 is built for demanding marine conditions, with dimensions of 170 x 90 x 50 mm and a weight of 196 g. It supports an extended temperature range from -15°C to 70°C and features IPX7 waterproofing, allowing it to withstand accidental immersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. Its safe distance from compasses is only 10 cm.
Connectivity and Resilience of the Garmin Pack
The GND 10 ensures minimal power consumption on the NMEA 2000 network, with a maximum of 1.1 W for an input voltage of 9 to 16 Vdc and an LEN of 4. It handles a wide range of NMEA 2000 PGNs, including wind data (130306), environmental parameters (130310, 130311), GNSS position data (129029), vessel heading (127250), speed (128259), and water depth (128267), ensuring broad compatibility with modern equipment. Compared to solutions based solely on native NMEA 2000 sensors, the GND 10 offers a unique capability to bridge to the proprietary Nexus network, a feature specific to Garmin gWind sensor users. While competitors like B&G or Raymarine offer their own network architectures, the GND 10 positions itself as Garmin’s solution for seamless integration of Nexus sensors, extending their utility within an NMEA 2000 environment.
