Detailed description
Detailed description
The Garmin GMR 24 xHD3 radome belongs to Garmin’s advanced marine radar range, alongside the GMR 18 HD3 and GMR 18 xHD3. This 24-inch xHD3 model is designed for demanding recreational boaters, offering high-definition radar detection and optimized network integration. It serves as a high-performance solution for navigation, target detection, and safety at sea, leveraging Garmin’s latest signal processing advancements.
Installation and mounting considerations
Installing the GMR 24 xHD3 radome requires strict adherence to mounting guidelines to ensure optimal performance and safety. It must be mounted high, above the vessel’s keel line, with minimal obstructions to avoid shadow zones or false echoes. The radar beam’s vertical dispersion is 12.5 degrees above and below the radiating element, necessitating adequate installation height to clear structures such as cabin roofs. A mast or pedestal may be required to optimize range and signal quality. The radome must also be kept away from heat sources, other electronic equipment (minimum 2 m), magnetic compasses (specified safety distance), and transmission equipment (minimum 1 m).
Network connectivity and power supply
The GMR 24 xHD3 uses Garmin BlueNet™ network technology, ensuring compatibility with Garmin BlueNet devices (chartplotters, BlueNet 20 switches) and Garmin Marine Network devices. For maximum performance and optimal support for future updates, connect the radome to the Garmin BlueNet side of the network. Connection to Garmin Marine Network devices is possible via a Garmin Marine Network adapter cable (part number 010-12531-01, sold separately if not included). Power must be connected directly to the battery, using appropriate wire gauges for cable extensions (16 AWG for 2 m, 14 AWG for 4 m, 12 AWG for 6 m) and maintaining the inline fuse holder for safety and warranty compliance. A software update of the Garmin chartplotter is mandatory during installation of this device.
