Detailed description
Detailed description
Designed for marine navigation, the Garmin GMR Fantom™ 254 radar is a 4-foot (1.22 m) solid-state system with 250 W power output, equivalent to a 15 kW magnetron radar. It provides high-resolution target detection and imaging over ranges from 6 meters to 96 nautical miles.
Advanced detection technologies
The GMR Fantom™ 254 integrates MotionScope™ technology, which uses the Doppler effect to identify and highlight moving targets with different colors, facilitating collision avoidance, locating bird flocks, or tracking weather. The Pulse Compression technology improves radar image resolution and maximizes energy for precise target detection and identification. This radar also features automatic MARPA acquisition, allowing tracking of up to 30 moving targets without manual intervention.
Navigation and integration features
For a clear radar image, the system uses scan-to-scan averaging (Scan-to-Scan Averaging), which reduces sea clutter and interference. True Echo Trails display a fading trace of moving targets, compensating for vessel movement to quickly identify target direction. The Auto Bird Gain function automatically adjusts gain to detect surface birds, indicating potential fishing zones, while the Dynamic Sea Filter adapts to sea conditions. A configurable Guard Zone triggers an alarm if an object enters it. The radar can overlay its image on the chartplotter screen (Radar Overlay), in single-display or split-screen mode with independent range settings. It is compatible with Garmin GPSMAP multifunction displays (MFD) from the 7x2, 9x2, 10x2, 12x2, 7400, 7600, 8000, 8200, 8400, and 8600 series.
Technical specifications
The GMR Fantom™ 254 operates on an input voltage of 10 to 32 V DC. Its 4-foot beam antenna has a horizontal beam width of 1.8° and vertical beam width of 23°. The rotation speed is 24 or 48 RPM (48 RPM available in single-range mode with MotionScope disabled and on ranges ≤ 12 NM). The pedestal measures 42.1 x 36.4 x 27.1 cm, and the complete assembly (including antenna) has a height of 40.3 cm and a diameter of 131.4 cm. The beam antenna weighs 5.2 kg and the pedestal 15.7 kg. It has IPX6 waterproofing and supports a maximum wind load of 80 knots.
