Detailed description
Detailed description
The Garmin GMR Fantom™ 56 marine radar is an open-array system designed for improved target detection and situational awareness. It features solid-state technology with a 50 W transmit power, equivalent to a 6 kW magnetron. This radar provides detection ranges from 6 meters (20 feet) to 72 nautical miles (133 km), including in challenging weather conditions such as fog or rain.
Technology and Performance
With a 182.9 cm (6 ft) antenna length and a 1.25-degree horizontal beam width, the GMR Fantom™ 56 delivers high-resolution imagery and target separation. MotionScope™ technology uses Doppler to identify and color moving targets on the chartplotter, aiding collision avoidance, bird flock location, and weather tracking. Pulse compression technology delivers high-resolution imagery and maximizes energy to improve target detection and identification without power waste. Rotation speeds of 24 and 48 RPM (the latter available in single-range mode with MotionScope disabled and range settings of 12 NM or less) enable rapid screen updates.
Advanced Navigation Features
The GMR Fantom™ 56 offers Dual Range, displaying short- and long-range radar images simultaneously on a split screen. Radar overlay integrates radar imagery onto the chartplotter’s chart page for improved navigation and situational awareness; an autopilot or heading sensor is recommended for optimal results. Dual radar support provides redundancy and allows each display unit on the vessel to pull data from one of two different radar sources. Auto Bird Gain, Dynamic Auto Gain, and Dynamic Sea Filter automatically adjust parameters for performance tailored to varied navigation environments. MARPA (Mini-Automatic Radar Plotting Aid) target tracking can follow up to 30 selected targets, assisting in tracking other vessels and collision avoidance (requires a heading sensor, sold separately). Other features include echo trails, target size adjustment, programmable antenna parking, and guard zones. The system is compatible with Garmin GPSMAP chartplotters in the 7x2, 9x2, 10x2, 12x2, 7400, 7600, 8000, 8200, 8400, and 8600 series. Power requirement is 10–32 V DC.
