Detailed description
Detailed description
The Garmin GMR Fantom 5x radar pedestal (part number 010-01364-10) is the essential upper component for installing a Garmin GMR Fantom 5x open array radar system. Designed for robustness and performance, this component provides mechanical support for the antenna and integrates electronic systems, ensuring reliable and stable radar performance at sea.
Design and installation of the Garmin GMR Fantom 5x pedestal
This pedestal is supplied with all necessary mounting hardware: a mounting template for precise positioning, petroleum primer, plastic shoulder washers, flat washers, locking washers, and hex nuts. Installation requires a 15 mm (19/32 in) hole for mounting bolts and, if needed, a 32 mm (1 1/4 in) cable pass-through for power and network cables. Hex nuts on threaded rods must be tightened to 14.7 N·m (11 lbf·ft) for secure fastening. The antenna is then secured to the pedestal using hex bolts with a tightening torque of 7.9 N·m (6 lbf·ft).
Integration and technical specifications
The Garmin GMR Fantom 5x radar pedestal integrates with Garmin BlueNet™ or Garmin Marine Network. It is designed for 10–32 V DC power supply, potentially via a specific Garmin voltage converter (not compatible with older or third-party models). Grounding must connect to a marine ground using a 3.31 mm² (12 AWG) copper wire. Mounting considerations are critical to avoid interference and ensure safety: the radar must be installed high, above the keel line, with minimal beam obstruction, and away from heat sources, magnetic compasses (no safety distance provided), transmission equipment (minimum 1 m), and SSB radios (minimum 2 m).
Position in the Garmin lineup
As part of the GMR Fantom 5x system, this pedestal serves as a fundamental component of Garmin open array radars. Unlike compact dome radars such as the GMR Fantom 18 or 24, open array systems like the GMR Fantom 5x typically offer greater range and better target separation—key advantages for offshore navigation and long-range obstacle detection. This pedestal provides the mechanical base that enables the open array antenna to operate with maximum efficiency, ensuring precise rotation and signal transmission, which is essential to fully leverage the advanced detection and tracking capabilities of the Fantom series.
