Detailed description
Detailed description
The Garmin GPSMAP® 8416 is a high-end multifunction chartplotter designed for full integration of marine navigation and monitoring systems. Featuring a 16-inch display, it belongs to the GPSMAP 8400/8600 series, known for managing complex networks and advanced video features. This model serves as a central solution for sailboats and motorboats requiring detailed visualization and extended connectivity, distinguishing itself from older series like the 8000 or 7400 with its built-in video encoders and expanded networking capabilities. It offers a high-performance alternative to 16-inch multifunction displays from competitors such as Raymarine Axiom XL or B&G Zeus S.
Advanced integration and connectivity
The GPSMAP 8416 provides extended network integration capabilities, supporting Garmin Marine Network, NMEA 2000, NMEA 0183, HDMI (input and output), J1939, Wi-Fi, and ANT. It includes video encoder features, enabling video streams to be broadcast across all network displays. The system is compatible with a wide range of cameras, including FLIR M and MD series models, as well as Garmin GC™ 14 (010-02667-00) and Garmin GC™ 200 (010-02164-00) cameras. To integrate standard Ethernet equipment, a Garmin PoE isolation coupler (010-10580-10) is required, ensuring protection of the network and connected devices. It is recommended not to exceed five simultaneous video sources for optimal network performance.
Monitoring and tracking features
This chartplotter excels in monitoring and tracking. It supports camera tracking functions such as Compass Lock (maintaining a fixed heading), Vessel Lock (fixed angle relative to the vessel), and tracking of AIS targets, MARPA, or waypoints (slew-to-cue). These features require connection to specific sensors, including a GPS antenna, a heading sensor (ideally 9-axis for pitch and roll), a compatible AIS receiver, and a compatible radar. The GPSMAP 8400/8600 series, which includes the GPSMAP 8416, is designed for demanding marine environments, with a robust design and sealed joints ensuring water resistance. Software updates are performed via a memory card (16 to 32 GB formatted as FAT32) or the ActiveCaptain® app.
