Detailed description
Detailed description
The Garmin GPSMAP 9500 Black Box is a high-end chartplotter designed for professional marine navigation systems and complex installations. Positioned at the top of the Garmin range, this black box offers superior integration flexibility compared to standalone multifunction displays (MFD) from the GPSMAP 9000xsv or 9000 series. It requires an external HDMI-compatible monitor to operate, allowing custom configurations with screens up to 4K resolution at 60 fps for HDMI IN 1 input and 4K at 30 fps for HDMI IN 2 input, plus an HDMI OUT port for the main monitor.
Connectivity and System Integration
This GPSMAP 9500 unit features extended network connectivity for full onboard integration. Its Garmin BlueNet™ network ports enable sharing of radar, sonar, and detailed mapping data with other Garmin BlueNet devices. Compatibility with older Garmin Marine Network devices is ensured via a Garmin BlueNet 30 gateway. The unit also includes an NMEA 2000 port for interconnecting GPS sensors, VHF radios, and other NMEA 2000-compatible equipment, as well as a J1939 port for engine data integration. Two USB-C ports (one DRD configurable as host or client) and a composite video input (CVBS IN) complete the connection options.
Control and User Experience
Although the unit is remote, system control is optimized. The GPSMAP 9500 Black Box can be operated via a third-party touchscreen connected via HDMI and USB, or by a GRID™ 20 remote control (sold separately) connected to the NMEA 2000 network. It is also compatible with the ActiveCaptain® app for software and chart updates, as well as data management. The device is designed for multi-screen stations, offering advanced customization options for SmartMode™ layouts and data overlays, surpassing the flexibility of more compact MFDs. Installation requires adequate ventilation and a location not exposed to extreme temperatures, as specified in the mounting guidelines.
