Detailed description
Detailed description
Designed for communication and situational awareness, the Garmin Signal™ VHF 400 is a fixed marine VHF radio integrating an SOTDMA Class B AIS transponder. It features a 3.5-inch full-touch color display with edge-to-edge glass, optimizing space at the helm.
Advanced Communication and Safety
The VHF 400 offers SOTDMA Class B AIS transmit and receive capabilities, displaying range, heading, speed, and crossing status of other AIS-equipped vessels for improved environmental awareness. The system also integrates Digital Selective Calling (DSC) Class D, enabling rapid distress signal transmission and contact establishment with other vessels via the AIS screen. The included hand microphone features a built-in 5 W RMS (95 dBA at 0.5 meter) speaker, ensuring clear audio with adaptive noise reduction via machine-learning algorithms that filter wind, waves, and engine noise.
Integration and Innovative Features
With its integrated GPS receiver, the Garmin Signal™ VHF 400 provides accurate position data without requiring an external GPS antenna, though external connection is possible for installations with weak reception. The unit is compatible with 12 V and 24 V electrical systems and requires only a single VHF antenna for VHF, DSC, and AIS functions, simplifying installation. Its 25-watt transmit power ensures maximum range. The VHF audio playback function automatically records up to three minutes of transmissions across three channels simultaneously, while advanced monitoring modes allow continuous monitoring of Channel 16 and up to six pre-set channels. Integrated Wi-Fi connectivity enables software updates via the ActiveCaptain app.
Connectivity and Durability
The VHF 400 integrates with Garmin marine networks via NMEA 2000, Garmin Marine Network 1.0, and Garmin BlueNet, offering centralized management from a compatible Garmin chartplotter. It supports connection of an external speaker and hailer with listening function. The built-in intercom enables communication between the main unit and remote stations such as the Garmin Signal RM 100. Its robust design meets IPX7 waterproofing standards. For upgrades, a retrofit kit (sold separately) allows installation in existing cutouts of Garmin VHF 210/215 radios and, with modification, VHF 110/115 units.
